TODAY'S TOPICS: ACORN and Obama Campaign Strike Back!, Ohio Victory!, "The Disgrace", "Joe" the "Plumber", Oil

The national press corps continues to revere John McCain despite what is widely acknowledged to be the toxic and ugly campaign he's running because they still think that this campaign is being run despite McCain's character and wishes, not because of them. The idea that someone should be judged by their actual conduct never seems to occur to them, nor do they accept what ought to be the rather self-evident proposition that someone who repeatedly does dishonorable things is, by definition, dishonorable. By their fruits ye shall know them.

SNIP

If I could be granted one small wish about our political discourse, it would be that reporters and pundits would accept -- as disappointing and unglorious as it is -- that, under our Constitution and basic government design, people who aren't in the military don't have a "Commander-in-Chief." The President isn't your "commander," and the "Commander-in-Chief" power, now synonymous in our political culture with "President," is actually extremely limited (Art. II, Sec. 2:

"The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States").
This endless festishization of "President as Our Commander-in-Chief" is one of those small but pernicious reflections of how militarized we've become, of how we are a society in a state of perpetual and endless war. And -- though I don't think there's a strong complaint to be made that the media generally has been unfair to Barack Obama -- this "Commander-in-Chief" fetish is also one of the principal causes of the ongoing media reverence for John S. McCain.

-- Glenn Greenwald on the fact that the media remains in denial that they were wrong about McCain all these years…he’s not honorable and he’s no maverick.

ACORN RESPONDS, OBAMA TEAM READY THIS TIME!

First, the silver lining in the McCain campaign and the GOP's Klan like "Deliverance rallies", racist attacks, and the most despicable lies in political history directed towards ACORN (all so they can steal another Presidency) is that in their desperation they are showing their true colors. This, "my friends", is the face of today's Republican party.

This is the "crime family" I have been talking about for years on this blog finally crumbling before our very eyes. They are like some cornered animal, desperate, lunging, attacking, and frothing at the mouth in fear for their lives. Their 30 year reign of terror is coming to a catastrophic end for them, and their sick and twisted true colors are there for all now to see.

Granted, the media still can't get even the most rudimentary stories correct, such as their absolutely ABYSMAL, and criminal coverage of the slanderous attacks on ACORN. But, no matter, the GOP is a cancer, and they are finished.

Of course, just as they are inciting their racist and inbred hordes into violent and bloodthirsty orgies for Obama's head, just as surely as night follows day, violence is now being directed at ACORN offices and officials in the wake of the flood of right-wing demagoguery about its vote-gathering efforts:

An ACORN community organizer received a death threat and the liberal activist group's Boston and Seattle offices were vandalized Thursday, reflecting mounting tensions over its role in registering 1.3 million mostly poor and minority Americans to vote next month.

OBAMA FIGHTS BACK ON ELECTION FRAUD!

But here's the REALLY GOOD NEWS. Obama, unlike both Gore and Kerry was ready!!! He's taking the offensive, and urging an investigation into the false attacks on ACORN, as well as the White House and McCain camps attempt to create a phony voter fraud hysteria in order to suppress votes! Everything I've been saying, is now underway, and Obama turns out to have been ready after all! Same goes for Ohio's Secretary of State Jane Brunner and her big Supreme Court victory!!

First, watch Olbermann connect the dots between the Attorney firings, phony voter fraud allegations, Rove, the White House, and the McCain camp. And watch him talk with Obama's chief lawyer who's all over it!

http://crooksandliars.com/logan-murphy/breaking-obama-campaign-calls-investi

And watch Olbermann and Maddow discuss this absolutely fantastic turn of events!! That's right, a Democrat is FIGHTING BACK on election theft!! Yeahh!!! Thank you Obama!

ACORN RESPONDS - GET THE FACTS!

The following FACTS need to be read by everybody (apparently), even those who believe they are progressives, yet have fallen for the GOP's Dixie-Chicking of ACORN...

Fact: ACORN has implemented the most sophisticated quality-control system in the voter engagement field but in almost every state we are required to turn in ALL completed applications, even the ones we know to be problematic.

Fact: ACORN flags in writing incomplete, problem, or suspicious cards when we turn them in,. Unfortunately, some of these same officials then come back weeks or months later and accuse us of deliberately turning in phony cards. In many cases, we can actually prove that these are the same cards we called to their attention.

Fact: Our canvassers are paid by the hour, not by the card. ACORN has a zero-tolerance policy for deliberately falsifying registrations, and in the cases where our internal quality controls have identified this happening we have fired the workers involved and turned them in to election officials and law-enforcement.

Fact: No criminal charges related to voter registration have ever been brought against ACORN or partner organizations. Convictions against individual former ACORN workers have been accomplished with our full cooperation, using the evidence obtained through our quality control and verification processes - evidence which in most cases WE called to the attention of authorities

Fact: Most election officials have recognized ACORN's good work and praised our quality control systems. Even in the cities where election officials have complained about ACORN, the applications in question represent less than 1% of the thousands and thousands of registrations ACORN has collected.

Fact: Our accusers not only fail to provide any evidence, they fail to suggest a motive: there is virtually no chance anyone would be able to vote fraudulently, so there is no reason to deliberately submit phony registrations. ACORN is committed to ensuring that the greatest possible numbers of people are registered

ACORN will not be intimidated, we will not be provoked, and in this important moment in history we will not allow anyone to distract us from these vital efforts to empower our constituencies and our communities to speak for themselves.

John McCain Continues to Put Winning by 'Destroying the Fabric of Democracy' First, and His Country and its Democratic Ideals a Distant Second

As Some (But Not Enough) Republicans Back Away From the GOP's ACORN 'Voter Fraud' Hoax...

FL's Republican Governor Charlie Crist said about all of this ACORN "voter fraud" nonsense: "There's some who sort of enjoy chaos. That's kind of what's going on more than fraud."

Bingo, Charlie. And rather ironic, given the GOP's own far-worse-than-ACORN's record of registration form problems in California; Crist's own record of voter purges in his own state; the Republican Party's dismal history of trying to use ACORN at the last minute, just before elections, in order to wreak the "chaos" that Crist was referring to; and the outrageous statement John McCain made during Wednesday's debate...

Yes, Supreme Court sides with Dems over GOP efforts to stop Ohioans from voting!!:

The justices on Friday overruled a federal appeals court that had ordered Ohio's top elections official to do more to help counties verify voter eligibility. Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, a Democrat, faced a deadline of Friday to set up a system to provide local officials with names of newly registered voters whose driver's license numbers or Social Security numbers on voter registration forms don't match records in other government databases.

Get the real story of ACORN and the GOP's brazen attempts to slander them...and steal just one more election.

A few clips:

John McCain and other Republicans making criminal allegations against the community-organizing group ACORN know exactly what they're doing. They're using alarmist allegations of "voter fraud" to fire up their conservative base and suppress the votes of some citizens who may, out of fear, stay away from the polls.

They exploit lingering unease among the poor and minorities who, with some justification, believe themselves to suffer disproportionately from unbalanced wheels of justice in America. These innocents know they don't have to commit crimes to be accused of crimes. Better to stay away from the places where the accusations might be leveled. Like the polls.

The allegations can also help cover up actual election fraud undertaken on behalf of McCain. This is the tactic Karl Rove learned so well from his right-wing predecessors: accuse your opponent of your own unethical or illegal acts.

SNIP

If media bias is not the answer to broad coverage of spurious registration fraud allegations, what is the answer?

I think it has something to do with our history. The right to vote has always been contested. In our early years, those without property couldn't vote. Neither could women, freed blacks, or slaves. It took 140 years for women to be granted the franchise. Exclusion is a tradition with deep roots in our cultural narratives and founding documents. Historically accustomed as we are to exclusion, maybe we don't judge it to be news.

Illegally crossing barriers to inclusion, however, is news. I guess. Isn't it finally time for the media to drop the habit and turn its attention to anti-democratic voter suppression tactics they know are anti-democratic? Isn't it time they dropped their complicity in voter suppression schemes? The ACORN controversy would be a good place to start.

http://www.commondreams.org/view/2008/10/16-4

SAY IT AIN'T SO "JOE"

His first name isn't really Joe. It's Samuel. He's not really a plumber - at least, not a licensed one. He's concerned about increased taxes - but hasn't paid his own income taxes. He only makes $40,000 or so, not over $250,000 like he said...meaning he'd benefit from Obama's tax plan, not McCain's. The business he works FOR, only makes about $100,000, not $250,000, so it won't get taxed under Obama's plan either. This is the most sick and surreal campaign I have EVER SEEN!!

Even if he did earn $280,000 per year as he projected he might, Wurzelbacher "would pay just $773 more in taxes under Obama's plan than McCain's," hardly a crippling blow to his business. The Toledo Blade reports that Joe the Plumber currently earns well under $100,000 per year. In that case, he would save more under Obama's plan than McCain's. "Rather than a game-changing blow for the McCain campaign, 'Joe the plumber' is turning into a bad case of blowback,'' said Rogan Kersh, a public service professor at New York University.

Since Wednesday's debate, Joe 'The Plumber" Wurzelbacher has been warmly embraced by conservatives. However, he may soon fall victim to the right wing's crusade against so-called voter fraud. On Tuesday, a federal court ruled in favor of the Ohio Republican Party, allowing Ohio poll observers to force voters whose registrations don't match other state databases to fill out provisional ballots. These ballots are "used to record a vote if a voter's eligibility is in question." Provisional ballots, though, greatly increase the chance a voter's ballot will not be counted. In Ohio's March primary, the Cleveland Plain Dealer found that 20 percent of the provisional ballots were rejected, even though "many people shouldn't have lost their votes." Because Wurzelbacher is misregistered as "Worzelbacher," he may be one of the voters caught up in the misguided system. As Michael Waldman, the executive director of the Brennan Center for Justice, noted, Joe the Plumber is a "perfect example" of why these voter fraud laws are more harmful than helpful. "Purging voters or blocking their registration because of data errors is disenfranchisement by typo," he said.

FROM C&L: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average income for a plumber is around $43,000. There's no question that any plumber making that much money (or 5x that amount) is better off under Barack Obama's tax plan. Furthermore, middle class folks are more likely to add that extra bathroom or redo their kitchen when they finally get some relief. In the case of "Joe the Plumber", as the Senator articulated last night, he will get tax credits for the new jobs he creates.

Also, and this is something I fault Obama for failing to mention, his health care plan will help to dramatically reduce costs for employers whereas McCain's "plan" will levy an additional tax. In other words, taxes can't simply be viewed through the prism of income taxes. There are other areas where Barack will cut taxes that will, in the end, be a net gain for someone in "Joe's" position.

OIL PRICES PLUMMET...WHAT A SHOCK AT ELECTION TIME...

Funny, notice how a couple months before EVERY MAJOR ELECTION oil prices plummet? It's almost comical...how obvious do they have to make it they both want to help Republicans, but also want to try and hurt ballot measures across the country designed to either invest more in renewable energy or penalize oil companies? Answer: Obvious! They just know people won't connect the dots.

Of course, some of the reduction is due to less demand, which only STRENGTHENS the environmental argument regarding the need for vastly more fuel efficient vehicle fleets!!

Oil prices dropped below $70 a barrel for the first time in 14 months. "The decline in oil prices came after a government report showed domestic crude oil stockpiles rose more than expected as Americans use less oil, in part because they are driving less."

TODAY'S TOPICS: Awful Debate/But an Obama Win, Reagan v. FDR, Election Fraud 08', Phony "Voter Fraud", Olbermann Special Comment

THE DEBATE - EXCRUCIATING

Now that was the most excruciating and irritating debate as I've ever watched. On one hand we have this weird science project to the right of the screen, some sick love child of Gollum from the Lord of the Rings and Igor from Young Frankenstein - otherwise known as grumpy gramps McCain - twitching, snorting, rolling his eyes, waving his tiny one foot long arms, grimacing, grunting, snarling, blinking incessantly, and making one false attack after another. And on the other hand you have this ULTRA cautious and cool Barack Obama, who while the clear winner, pretty much went through the whole debate with soft cuddly mittens on, rather than the spiked brass knuckles I'd like to see.

But, as I have come to understand, as long as Obama's cool and laid back approach doesn't turn off the base, and somehow lower the massive turnout that is expected (which won't happen this year), this style is a winner for those cro-magnon, knuckle dragging "undecideds".

The Polls bare this out:

According to a national poll that CNN conducted after the debate, 58% of people felt Barack Obama won the debate, while 31% felt that John McCain performed better. The poll also indicates that the majority of people polled felt Obama would do a better job on the economy, health care, and taxes. Additionally, those polled felt Obama was more likable and the stronger leader.

CBS News conducted its own poll of uncommitted voters and found that Barack Obama won the third debate by a wide margin: 53% believed that Sen. Obama was stronger while 22% sided with Sen. McCain. 25% thought it was too close to call.

I thought the real turning point in the debate came when the Supreme Court FINALLY came up, in particular abortion (the first time in three of these)!! Obama showed his constitutional law professor credentials while McCain made the gaffe of the evening when he belittled procedure bans that grant exemptions for the "health of the mother," mocking the phrase by framing it with air quotation marks.

Here's that exchange: http://crooksandliars.com/david-neiwert/so-much-mccains-outreach-women-voter

McCain's party remember, has adopted an extreme position on abortion in its platform this year, refusing to allow for exceptions to an abortion ban even in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. "Tonight, John McCain showed he doesn't care about women's health when he described protecting 'the health of the woman' as 'extreme,'" said Cecile Richards, the president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. "He blatantly showed that he doesn't trust women to decide what is in the best interest of their own health." Ouch.

I personally would like Obama to hit McCain harder on the ludicrous "spending freeze" nonsense too. In the past weeks his campaign has made exceptions for defense, veterans programs, entitlement programs, worker retraining, and "a special carve-out for spending on science." The exception-riddled spending freeze proposal is reminiscent of McCain's dramatic promise to abolish earmark projects. When it was pointed out that aid to Israel and funding for military housing were included in his tally as earmarks, McCain assured he would spare those programs. In the end, McCain could not identify a single earmark he would cut.

A spending freeze would entail large per capita cuts in everything from education to the FBI and federal prisons to national parks, highway and bridge repair, food stamps, to name a few. Along with having a deleterious impact on people who rely on these programs, the cuts would cause economic growth to contract at a time when the country is in need of a second stimulus to forestall the risk of a deep recession.

But back to the Supreme Court, as I still thought this was the most important part of the debate as the next President is likely to appoint at least two new justices. And yes, Obama really let McCain get off scott free on this issue too....though he still demonstrated superior knowledge and an ability to articulate the issue.

First McCain vowed not to impose "a litmus test" to determine his nominees, but then also emphasized he would name those "who have a history of strict adherence to the Constitution" and who would not be "legislating from the bench." These are code phrases for the conservative wing of his party. As CNN's legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin noted, McCain "is getting his advice on the Court from the most extreme elements of the conservative movement."

Indeed, the evangelical leader Gary Bauer said in 2005 that despite McCain's litmus test claims, "McCain, in private, assured me he would appoint pro-life judges." Many important principles hang in the balance of just one justice; a McCain Court with only one or two new appointees could overturn abortion rights, ignore privacy rights, refuse habeas corpus to terror detainees, end affirmative action, and ban gay marriage. McCain also reaffirmed his opposition to equal pay for equal work, defending his refusal to join a law making it easier to file suit for discriminatory pay by calling the law "a trial lawyer's dream."

He has justified his opposition to the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act by claiming women just need "the education and job training." In fact as The American Prospect's Dana Goldstein pointed out, "Women account for 56 percent of the undergraduate student population and 59 percent of the graduate school population. Across all age groups, over half of all the people in the United States with a bachelor's degree or master's degree are women."

Though Obama hit him only a bit on the ledbetter Act...and not all those other rights that will be eliminated if McCain chooses the next Supreme Court...McCain still looked befuddled, confused, constipated, and irritated.

All in all, it was another win for Obama, though a disappointing performance overall for me. He clearly knows he's winning this race, and is just trying not to offend anyone or make a big mistake. I really do think that race is a part of why he holds back. I think Obama is very cognizant of not looking like some black man beating up on an old white grumpy grampa.

What he has going for him is McCain is an ugly, ugly human being, from soul to skin. Voters see this, and right now I think they want to be soothed and comforted at this time of near unprecedented economic insecurity. They are concerned about their future, their homes, their health care, and their pensions, and more than anything, they want someone smart, competent and in control, not some half human ticking time bomb, attacking ones opponent like some pit bull on PCP...

Robert Scheer writes on what I've been framing this time in our history as too: FDR versus Reagan...which direction will we now go? We see, firsthand, the devastation of the Reagan/Bush trickle down economics, and we know the great successes of the New Deal...can't we get this choice, the easiest ever offered, correct?

A few clips:

And the winner is ... Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Remember him-the great Democratic president who saved capitalism from the capitalists by reining in their exorbitant greed? Forget the Reagan Revolution heralding a new era of small government, which turned out to be nothing more than a fig leaf for legalized corporate crime. The hero of the hour is FDR, as the essential wisdom of his New Deal is now embraced by most Republicans as well as Democrats.

SNIP

No one in Washington had a clearer warning of the dangers of those games and gimmicks than McCain, who, as one of the Keating Five, ran interference for the savings-and-loan swindlers of an earlier era. But McCain did not personally share in the financial misfortune of those who lost their life's saving in the S&L meltdown; his wife, Cindy McCain, had an inside track with Charles Keating and made more than a million bucks participating in Keating's swindles before the financier was dispatched to prison.

Instead of learning the harsh lessons of the S&L debacle, McCain plunged ahead, crusading for even more extreme deregulatory measures that dismantled the financial safeguards FDR had put in place to prevent another Great Depression. McCain, as much as anyone, is responsible for the decriminalization of the reckless conduct that he now attributes to Wall Street

http://www.commondreams.org/view/2008/10/15-0

Let's take a closer look at what this meltdown is really all about: The Reagan pyramid scheme, as well as ways to get us back on track.

The Republican Party that Nixon invented melded the moneyed classes of the Northeast with the white evangelicals of the South. This odd couple went on to simultaneously steal from and oppress the rest of us. The moneyed classes were happy to let the New Puritans impose their stringent morality, since they could always just buy any licentiousness they wanted, regardless of the law. And the New Puritans were so consumed with cultural issues such as homosexuality, abortion, school prayer and (yes) fighting school desegregation that they were happy to let the northeastern Money Men waltz off with a lion's share of the country's resources, consigning most Americans to stagnant wages and increasing debt. The Reagan revolution consolidated this alliance and brought some conservative Catholic workers into it.

These domestic policies at home were complemented by wars and belligerence abroad, which further took the eye of the public off the epochal bank robbery being conducted by the American neo-Medicis, and which were a useful way of throwing billions in government tax revenue to the military-industrial complex, which in turn funded the think tanks and reelection campaigns of the right wing politicians. The Reagan fascination with private armies and funding anti-communist death squads contributed mightily to the creation of al-Qaeda, blowback from which fuelled even bigger Pentagon budgets, spiralling upward and feeding on itself. Terrorism is much better than Communism as a bogey man, since you can just intimate that there are a handful of dangerous people out there somewhere, and force the public to pay over $1 trillion to combat them. In fact, of course, less US interventionism abroad would create less blowback, and genuine threats are better addressed through good police work by multilingual FBI agents than by a $700 billion Pentagon budget.

As a result of the Second Gilded Age and its serf-like subservience to big capital, most corporations in the US don't pay any income taxes, despite doing $2.5 trillion annually in business.

SNIP

These problems could be fixed with a graduated income tax and a closing of tax loopholes ( after we get out of the recession or crash or whatever this is); by legislation criminalizing regulatory capture; by requiring mass media to run political ads for free as a public service (the public owns the airwaves); and by much shortening the election season (please).

A lot of America's fiscal and educational problems were caused by congressionally mandated fixed sentences imposed on judges with regard to marijuana possession, as a sop to the New Puritans that make up 1/3 of the Republican Party. You have a lot of people serving 5 years in jail for having small amounts of pot. The states had to build new prisons to hold them all. They took the money out of the budget for higher education, abolishing the whole idea of state universities and causing tuitions to rise.

ELECTION FRAUD CENTRAL - THEFT O8' HAS BEGUN

Now, you all should be prepared for everything that is happening now...as I have predicted it all. Now we see 200,000 newly registered voters reported information that did not match motor-vehicle or Social Security records in Ohio (I warned everybody about this coming challenge and purge of newly registered voters weeks ago). Some discrepancies could be as simple as a misspelling...gee...what a surprise...

FROM AP:

Brunner previously cross-checked new-voter registrations with databases run by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicle and the Social Security Administration and made the results available online, but the 6th Circuit said the information was not accessible in a way that would help county election boards ferret out mismatches.

Brunner, a Democrat, told The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer on Wednesday that she is concerned the court decision is a veiled attempt at disenfranchising voters. Brunner said she'll urge counties not to force these people to use provisional ballots.

BRAD BLOG: So Where's the ACORN 'Voter Fraud'?

It Doesn't Exist, But That Fact Won't Keep the Wingnuts From Claiming Otherwise...

So where's the "voter fraud"?

Fox "News", and it's Rupert Murdoch owned print brethren, the New York Post, continue to bang the GOP's phony ACORN "voter fraud" drum, but as far as I can tell, they've failed to come up with a single incident of any actual voter fraud committed by the dastardly "left-wing extremists".

Yes, Ann Coulter has committed felony voter fraud, but neither of the Murdoch outfits have yet to note that point, even while they go wall-to-wall with misleading reports claiming that ACORN is committing massive "voter fraud" on behalf of the Democrats.

So, as it's now been revealed that John McCain himself was a keynote speaker at a 2006 ACORN rally (on immigration reform) in Florida, where he declared to the ACORN volunteers in the room that they are "What makes America special", and as I've been going back and forth with commenters on my "Republican Voter Fraud Hoax" piece at the UK's Guardian (which today, has shot up to one of their most read items), still, nobody seems able to show me a single instance of any actual voter fraud committed by ACORN, or even anybody who registered via ACORN for that matter.B...

WV Finds Ballot Programming Error The Day Before Early Voting

Problem Not Found in Previous Public 'Logic & Accuracy' Testing...

FULL STORY: http://www.bradblog.com/?p=6510

FROM MOVEON...

For over twenty-five years, Republicans have promoted the myth of voting fraud to argue for restrictive voting laws—but Bush's own Justice Department found virtually no organized voting fraud.3 Now McCain is attacking ACORN in order to justify a frenzy of lawsuits making it harder for Obama supporters to vote.

Here's what he's not telling you:

The only fraud committed was against ACORN itself. ACORN hired 13,000 workers to register a remarkable 1.3 million new voters. And a few of them turned in registration forms with inaccurate and even made-up names to get credit for work they didn't do. ACORN fired them and turned them over to the authorities.4

ACORN reported the fraudulent registration forms. In most states, ACORN is required by law to submit all forms collected whether they appear to be bogus or not—that way election officials, not partisan groups, can make the call. ACORN flags cards that may not be legitimate. And in many places, the charges of fraud only came up because ACORN was the one who flagged the cards!5

This won't have any impact on the election. No one is allowed to vote unless they are properly registered. And there is no evidence of false registrations actually leading to organized voting fraud.6

END

More Truth About Voter Fraud

As the 2008 election process draws near -- and with early voting in many states having already begun -- conservatives are raising a great hue and cry about the threat of voter fraud. Attacks have centered on the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), the "nation's largest grassroots community organization of low- and moderate-income people," whose workers have registered 1.3 million new voters this year. Conservatives like Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL) and former Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell have seized on reports of improperly filled-out forms as evidence of "lawlessness" and "voting fraud," which will lead to "the kind of chaos you expect from a category-five hurricane." But mass voter fraud is just a conservative myth used to justify increasing the difficulty of the voting process. In an interview with Salon, Lori Minnite, a professor of political science at Barnard College who investigated allegations of widespread voter fraud, explained, "From 2002 to 2005 only one person was found guilty of registration fraud. Twenty people were found guilty of voting while ineligible and five people were found guilty of voting more than once. That's 26 criminal voters -- voters who vote twice, impersonate other people, vote without being a resident ... Meanwhile thousands of people are getting turned away at the polls."

COMPLEX AND ONEROUS RULES: Although the United States has a long and dark history of voter disenfranchisement and voter suppression, recent laws passed at the state and federal level have focused instead on the vaporous threat of voter fraud. These laws particularly discourage the poor and the young. Because voting, even for federal elections, is regulated by state law and administered at the local level, there is no consistent standard for voting machines, ballot design, the counting of provisional ballots, or voter identification. The 2002 Help America Vote Act (HAVA) requires that "any voter who has not previously voted in a federal election" must provide a form of ID. But "twenty-four states have broader voter identification requirements than what HAVA mandates" -- seven require photo ID for all voters, and 17 more require some form of ID. In April, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Indiana's draconian photo ID law that could disenfranchise as many as 400,000 voters, although Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita "conceded the state has never presented a case of 'voter impersonation.'" In his dissent, Justice David Souter compared Indiana's unjustified regulations to a poll tax, "because it correlates with no state interest so well as it does with the object of deterring poorer residents from exercising the franchise."

MASS DISENFRANCHISEMENT AND INTIMIDATION: Last week, the New York Times reported that "[t]ens of thousands of eligible voters in at least six swing states have been removed from the rolls or have been blocked from registering in ways that appear to violate federal law." Last Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy issued a scathing order Wednesday "lambasting the Montana Republican Party for challenging the registrations of thousands of Montana voters," writing, "The timing of these challenges is so transparent that it defies common sense to believe the purpose is anything but political chicanery." On Sunday, the Ohio Republican Party "requested information on voters who registered to vote and cast an early ballot on the same day," not long after Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer requested registration information -- including driver's license and Social Security numbers -- "for the 302 voters who took advantage of the window in that county, which has five colleges and universities, including two historically black colleges." In Indiana, state NAACP president Barbara Bolling said voters in three northern cities "are being disenfranchised each day they can't cast ballots at their local clerk's offices," after "two Republicans on the Lake County Election Board voted against the sites last month, contending in-person absentee voting makes vote fraud easier." In Colorado, the El Paso county clerk Bob Balink has engaged in an "emerging and consistent pattern" of purging voter rolls and challenging inaccurate registration information as "election fraud."

ROVE'S FINGERPRINTS: The Department of Justice, whose responsibilities include ensuring the right to fair elections, was subverted by the Bush administration to pursue the false threat of voter fraud. In 2002, former attorney general John Ashcroft announced an initiative that required "all components of the Department" to "place a high priority on the investigation and prosecution of election fraud." The 2006 purge of eight U.S. attorneys -- all lifelong Republicans -- at the behest of the Bush White House exposed the depths of this politicization. The White House justified the dismissals by telling reporters, "President Bush mentioned to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales in October that he had heard complaints from Congress that some federal prosecutors were lax in pursuing voter fraud." As the Washington Post reported last year, "Nearly half the U.S. attorneys slated for removal by the administration last year were targets of Republican complaints that they were lax on voter fraud, including efforts by presidential adviser Karl Rove to encourage more prosecutions of election-law violations."

TODAY'S POST: The GOP Misdirection: Blaming Fannie - Freddie - ACORN, Maddow, Brad Blog

The GOP is one hell of an ingenious crimnal syndicate, that much I'll give them. Only the GOP could flip the mortgage meltdown caused by deregulation and corporate greed into a referendum on quasi public organizations Freddie Mac and Fannie May. And only the GOP could flip the very, very real, massive election fraud operation they have been perpetrating on the American public into an assault on one of the truly special community and social justice organizations in our country, ACORN.

They have actually changed the frame of the debate into the need to privatize MORE (while blaming the Democrats), by attacking Fannie and Freddie for being the source of the mortgage crisis (which they are not), and actually have people believing ACORN and the Democrats are the ones to stop from "stealing the election".

So as the GOP purges millions of legitimate voters, and prepares to electonically eliminate millions more, we're all looking over registration forms that ACORN has submitted!

Both of these "narratives" are nothing more than a smoke and mirrors effort to get everyone to look in the wrong place so they can commit their crimes right under our noses (steal the 08' election, or cry that the Dems have once Obama wins, and privatize, privatize, privatize).

So to put everyone's minds at ease on the phony signatures uncovered, "Jive Turkey" and the Dallas Cowboy offensive line are NOT voting on November 4th! Those names the GOP has unearthed are names put in by PAID SIGNATURE gatherers, not real people that will vote. Plus, it's ACORN that alerted authorities to those names!!

The sheer evil, and sheer deviousness of these misdirections actually sends chills down my spine. The media's coverage of these lies as truth, only compounds that "chill".

So, after these videos, I will get to debunking these two shameless misdirections...

Finally, we have a moments break from the double standard that says nothing McCain and Palin have done can be talked about but EVERYTHING Obama has can.

Exhibit one: Palin’s ties to a radical secessionist party that hates America. Remember though, the press will do anything to create false equivalencies so everything appears “artificially balanced”. So Obama bringing up Charles Keating is no different than McCain bringing up Ayers. Or Palin implying Obama is a terrorist is no different than Biden mentioning Palin has been PROVEN to have abused ethics laws. See, ALL things are equal…what a crock:

http://crooksandliars.com/david-neiwert/palins-fringe-elements

Another perfect example of the GOP’s use of “false equivalencies”, as scumbag David Frum comes on Rachelle Maddow’s show:

http://crooksandliars.com/nicole-belle/rachel-maddow-show-david-frums-false-

Colbert has on a right wing critic of mildly retarded candidate for VP, Sarah Palin:

http://crooksandliars.com/nicole-belle/colbert-report-kathleen-parker-contin

Biden continues his good job in defending Obama and pointing out the sick, sick racist fearmongering of “the disgrace’s” campaign…though notice the little snide remark about him by the reporter at the very end:

http://crooksandliars.com/silentpatriot/nightline-biden-cant-believe-how-low

Mildly retarded Sarah Palin lashes out at…her own supporters trying to support her! Jesus this is getting surreal:

http://crooksandliars.com/silentpatriot/palin-accidentally-admonishes-her-ow

The Clintons continue to campaign for Obama…yet the media still keeps asking if they support him enough? Really??? I don’t remember, EVER, the person who came in second campaign more for the winner than Hillary has for Barack. The corporate press just can’t let go of their phony narratives.

“Jobs baby jobs” is a nice flip by Hillar of the “drill baby drill” too:

THE GOP’S TWO MISDIRECTIONS: BLAMING FANNIE/FREDDIE AND ACORN TO HIDE THEIR REAL CRIMES

BLAMING FANNIE/FREDDI

Despite conservatives claiming otherwise, federal records show that the subprime lending boom which led to the current financial crisis was initiated by "the private sector, not the government or government-backed companies" like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The subprime lending crisis was enhanced "by a dramatic weakening of underwriting standards for U.S. subprime mortgages" a federal report found Friday.

And economist Dean Baker breaks down the GOP's "flat earth" argument that the mortgage crisis somehow stems from Fannie and Freddie.

A few clips:

While no one should shed any tears over the collapse of these two giants - the top management and shareholders got what they deserved - it is equally ridiculous to lay the blame for the financial crisis on the shoulders of Fannie and Freddie. The underlying problem was the housing bubble, which Alan Greenspan allowed to grow unchecked and, arguably, actively promoted. The bubble was accentuated by the willingness of banks to ignore normal prudential standards in issuing mortgages and to make loans that they knew could not be paid off by the borrowers. And, of course, leveraging themselves to the sky guaranteed full-fledged disaster

SNIP

Fannie and Freddie's conduct was despicable. Their decision to dive into the junk certainly contributed to the further expansion of the bubble and worsened the pain from its eventual collapse. However, they were followers, not leaders. They didn't cause the bubble and the subprime craziness. This train had already left the station. Fannie and Freddie's crime was going along for the ride.

THE ACORN MISDIRECTION – SETTING THE STAGE FOR THE REAL THEFT

Brad Friedman writes on the disgrace that these issues are often covered better in Great Britain and even in Russia, than they are in my own country. This attack on ACORN literally blows my mind...

A few clips:

In just the last week, we've had a phoney stunt raid in swing state Nevada (where Acorn had been cooperating with officials for months, concerning problem canvassers they'd long ago fired); a Republican election official in swing state Missouri tell Fox News that she's being beseiged with fraudulent registration forms from Acorn (in a county where they've not done any registration work since August); a Republican sheriff in swing state Ohio, who, the very next day, suddenly requested the names and addresses of hundreds of early voters (with evidence of exactly zero wrong doing, but lots of Democratic-leaning college student in the particular county, and John McCain's state campaign chair as a partner in the investigation); and a screaming front page headline in Rupert Murdoch's New York Post about a guy who claims he was somehow tricked by Acorn into registering 72 times (but read the article closely to note he says he registered at the same address each time, which, even if true, would allow him - you guessed it - precisely one legal vote.)

It's an old Republican scam, but it's never been carried out with more zeal than this year. The Republicans have been putting so much time, money and resources into the propaganda leading up to this over the last four years, we should have expected no less.

SNIP

You'll hear that Donald Duck, Mary Poppins, Dick Tracy, Mickey Mouse and (new this year) the
starting lineup of the Dallas Cowboys football team have all had fraudulent registrations submitted in their names. That's true. And we know this, why? Because Acorn told officials about it when they followed the law and turned in those registrations, flagged as fraudulent. What you won't hear is that federal law requires anybody who does not register to vote in person at the county office to show an ID when they go to vote the first time. So, unless Donald Duck shows up with his ID, he won't be voting this November. You needn't worry, no matter how much even John McCain himself cynically and dishonourably tries to mislead you.

McCain Hearts ACORN! Was Keynote Speaker at Group's 2006 Rally!
(Were There Any Preconditions?)

Golly, for a group that's committed so much "voter fraud" for so long (if you're gullible enough to believe the lies that RNC/FNC has been telling you) it's mighty strange that, as News One notes, "McCain attended an ACORN convention just two years ago."

The once-honorable Republican's campaign has even seen fit to produce a video smear ad, attempting to tar Obama with "associations" to ACORN, and alleging the group has committed "massive voter fraud" to boot! (They've yet to produce any actual evidence for that, unfortunately.)

But more than just attending the ACORN-sponsored February 2006 rally, ACORN confirms in a statement today that McCain was actually the keynote speaker!...

Nutty Attacks On ACORN

In recent weeks, conservatives have escalated their attacks on ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. Conservative lawmakers were able to remove a provision aimed at aiding low-income housing programs from the Bush administration’s $700 billion economic bailout bill by calling it a "slush fund" for ACORN. Before that, conservatives blamed ACORN for "precipitating the subprime crisis." And last week, they alleged that the "purpose" of ACORN is to engage in voter fraud. However, as columnist Joel McNally correctly noted, the "underlying motive for attacking ACORN" seems to be that it is the "nation's largest grassroots community organization of low- and moderate-income people." "It is an organization that engages in that dreaded community organizing," McNally wrote. "It actually tries to give a voice to the poor and most vulnerable among us." Indeed, after years of enacting policies catering to the wealthy, the right-wing seems to be fearful of millions of new low-income voters registered by ACORN casting their ballots in favor of progressive policies.

VOTER 'FRAUD': In early October, ACORN announced that it had registered 1.3 million new voters for the November election. Seizing on reports of apparently fraudulent voter registrations in some states, conservatives began claiming that the "purpose" of ACORN is to commit "voter fraud." However, all that was found during a raid of ACORN's office in Nevada was apparently fraudulent voter registration forms, which do not constitute voter fraud. "It's not voter fraud unless someone shows up at the voting booth on election day and tries to pass himself off as 'Tony Romo.'" And who would try to do that?" wrote Rep. Jesse Jackson (D-IL). As New York University's Brennan Center for Justice noted, "[T]here are no reports that we have discovered of votes actually cast in the names of [false] registrants." Under most state laws, in fact, voter registration organizations like ACORN are required to turn in all the forms they receive, even the suspicious ones. Furthermore, as Brad Friedman pointed out in the Guardian, "[I]f [ACORN] can't authenticate the registration, or it's incomplete or questionable in other ways, they flag that form as problematic...In almost every case where you've heard about fraud by Acorn, it's because Acorn itself notified officials about the fraud that's been perpetrated on them by rogue canvassers."

THE ECONOMIC CRISIS: Before alleging that it was engaging in voter fraud, conservatives claimed that ACORN was responsible for the subprime crisis and the ensuing financial meltdown. Stanley Kurtz wrote in the National Review that ACORN "had a major role in precipitating the subprime crisis," and then said in the New York Post that ACORN helped "undermine the US economy by pushing the banking system into a sinkhole of bad loans." Thomas DiLorenzo claimed that ACORN forced lenders to make bad loans to low-income people "through a process that sounds like legalized extortion." However, the claim that ACORN -- or loans to low-income people in general -- caused the financial crisis by enabling lower-income families to buy homes has been debunked again and again. As Daniel Gross wrote in Newsweek, "[D]id AIG plunge into the credit-default swaps business with abandon because ACORN members picketed its offices? Please." Most economists blame the current crisis on market failure and sparse regulation, but conservatives are attempting to draw attention elsewhere by smearing the victims of predatory lending and implicating ACORN.

A LONG-RUNNING CAMPAIGN: Last Friday, conservative members of Congress "sent a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey requesting the Department of Justice ensure that the actions of ACORN did not violate federal laws." But conservatives have gone down this road before, only to find nothing. In 2004, ACORN faced three lawsuits pertaining to alleged voter fraud, all of which were dismissed. As noted at the time, "several politically motivated law firms brought baseless charges of voter registration fraud against ACORN in an effort to inhibit its work to register low-income and minority voters." But the Bush administration was so intent on furthering these trumped-up charges of voter fraud that in 2006 attorneys from the Department of Justice -- including New Mexico's David Iglesias -- were fired for not pursuing fraud cases "to the satisfaction of their bosses." Revealing the shallowness of the conservative outrage though, the New York Times reported last week that "tens of thousands of eligible voters in at least six swing states have been removed from the rolls or have been blocked from registering in ways that appear to violate federal law." This has garnered scant attention compared to the uproar surrounding ACORN

TODAY'S TOPICS: Real Election Fraud Story, ACORN Slandered, Krugman, Media "Balance", Eavesdropping

VIDEO SECTION

Bill Maher’s new rules…a must see:

http://crooksandliars.com/bluegal/real-time-new-rules

Paul Krugman, who just won the Nobel Prize, does his best to correct that age old corporate media tactic: create false and artificial “equality” between the actions of one campaign in the comparison to the other. One I’ve been hearing reporters say a lot is that BOTH campaigns have been getting dirty of late (not pointing out that only 35% of Obama’s ads are negative compared to 100% of McCain’s or that Obama’s attacks are true, and McCain’s are lies), citing Obama calling McCain erratic as if its some horrible agist attack (NO….IT’S BECAUSE HE IS ERRATIC) while McCain and Palin accuse Obama as being a terrorist sympathizer...or worse.

Uhhh…how are these two lines of attack even remotely comparable? Rather than state the truth — that the McCain/Palin ticket is now relying almost exclusively on some of the ugliest and most outright dangerous character smears seen in a modern presidential election —the media avoids "sounding bias" (meaning they're biased against the truth) by pretending that this is a phenomenon of which both sides are guilty in equal measure.

As C&L Notes: In a rational world, a legitimate attack on your opponent's unsteady and erratic leadership during times of crisis is light years away from the vicious, dangerous types of character assaults we're hearing from the McCain camp. I mean think about it: They're not even trying to sell policy anymore. Instead, they're linking the terms "Barack Hussein Obama" and "terrorist" to the point where John McCain is forced to remind his traveling lynch mob that Obama is not, in fact, a "scary Arab." And when he does, he gets viciously booed.

We shouldn't underestimate the significance of John Lewis' recent remarks. There's a reason McCain told Rick Warren that he's one of the wisest people he knows.

THE REAL ELECTION FRAUD STORY - AND THE ACORN MISDIRECTION

From Huffington Post (should all sound familiar to those that read me) : In the event that campaigning, purging and intimidating voters doesn't work, the Right is creating a myth like they did in 1960. They are creating the myth of a stolen election. Conservatives plan to claim that ACORN and Barack Obama stole the election. Their hope is to steal the legitimacy of what is looking like a massive repudiation of Bush, conservatives and the Republican Party. The Right plans to steal the election by trying to steal the legitimate defeat of them by progressive forces. And why wouldn't they? The entire Republican coalition could be shattered with this election.

As I am getting questions about the GOP ACORN "voter fraud" scam, and as I've already written about many of the ridiculous allegations now ramping up by the hour (thanks corporate media for not bothering to look into what's actually going on!) I thought it'd be useful to go through this particular red herring again.

In the case of Obama the conservative movement is lining up a serious of story elements. They are:

• Obama was a community organizer.
• ACORN, a group that does community organizing, has committed voter fraud.• Obama is from Chicago.
• You know what happens in elections in Chicago. Remember the 1960 election.

What’s especially extraordinary that they have made this a national story is that the 2000 (wow, a whole 2000 fake names!!!) fraudulent names found on voter registration forms aren’t people that are going to vote, they are fake people that gets paid signature gatherers extra money!!! This happens all the time now…in fact, ACORN has a thorough vetting process, and there’s even another step before the names actually make the roles.

But, the GOP operation has been getting ahold of ACORN lists before either one or both of these steps have been taken, and thus, as one would expect, some of the names are forgeries…forgeries to get extra money for the signature gatherers!!! “Jive Turkey” is NOT VOTING on November 4th, I assure you. So this whole “scandal” is a con of massive proportions, all designed to ingeniously shift the focus to the Democrats stealing the election rather to their HUGE NATIONAL effort to do so themselves. An effort that is purging MILLIONS of legal voters from the rolls as we speak…to say nothing for e-voting machine hacking.

The GOP is a truly ingenious criminal enterprise, and watching the media cover this “ACORN Scandal” really breaks my heart, as they do such good work lifting communities of color and the poor up, and bringing them in to the system (see why they have been targeted??).

Here’s a great piece on the Huffington Post:

The story is half true and half lies. As we all know, Barack Obama is from Chicago and was a community organizer. Those are the only true parts of the conservative story. But the other two facts are myths: the 1960 election wasn't stolen (says the conclusion of recounts and investigations in 1960 and numerous academic studies since). And, ACORN has not committed voter fraud. Not one bit.

The facts about ACORN are worth getting out. ACORN is an organization that, among other things, registers low-income people to vote. One of the ways they do this is to hire door-to-door canvassers from the neighborhoods they are working in. This sort of work is tightly regulated. So, when one of the thousands of people they give jobs to doesn't do their work right and brings back bogus or phony voter registration cards, the law REQUIRES that ACORN turn the forms in to the voter registration office. The law, rightly, doesn't want anybody throwing out voter registration forms for any reason.

But ACORN goes a step farther. They have people assigned to do quality control on all the cards--calling people on the forms after they fill them out. When they find bad information on the cards they attach a cover sheet to the card but, as mentioned above, they turn in the cards as required by law. The effect is that a few bad canvassers or a poorly run office will mean that bad cards are submitted as part of the normal process. But ACORN has done everything possible to make sure voting officials know to check the forms.

NEWS CLIPS

AFTER AIRING ADS FOR BIG OIL, ABC REFUSES TO AIR WE CAMPAIGN AD: Since September, Al Gore's We Campaign has been running its "Repower America" television ad that criticizes the "hundreds of millions of dollars" that big oil spends on lobbyists and ads to keep Americans "stuck with dirty and expensive energy." Not surprisingly, coverage of the presidential race by the corporate media has been fueled by ad revenue from the hydrocarbon industry. For example, CNN's coverage is sponsored by the coal industry, while CBS is sponsored by Exxon Mobil. Following Tuesday's presidential debate, ABC aired one of Chevron's greenwashing "Human Energy" ads, but has so far refused to air the We Campaign's "Repower America" ad. ABC claimed in a a statement to the We Campaign, "Per our Guidelines, national buildings may be used in advertising provided the depictions are incidental to the advertiser's promotion of the product or service. Given the messages and themes of this commercial, the image of the Capital building is not incidental to this advertising." The offending section of the ad shows the words "Big Oil spends hundreds of millions to block clean energy" superimposed over a photo of the U.S. Capital dome. Cathy Zoi, CEO of the Alliance for Climate Protection responded by urging supporters to ask ABC to reconsider its decision.

ABC REPORT: NSA 'ROUTINELY' LISTENED TO AMERICANS' PHONE CALLS, PASSED AROUND 'SALACIOUS' BITS: ABC News reported yesterday that "despite pledges by President George W. Bush and American intelligence officials to the contrary, hundreds of US citizens overseas have been eavesdropped on as they called friends and family back home." The allegations come from "two former military intercept officers assigned to the National Security Agency" and "include claims that U.S. spies routinely listened in on intimate conversations and sometimes shared the recordings with each other." The Washington Post noted today that "at least some of the snooping was done under relaxed eavesdropping rules approved by the Bush administration to facilitate spying on terrorists." According to the ABC report, NSA employees "routinely shared salacious or tantalizing phone calls that had been intercepted, alerting office mates to certain time codes of 'cuts' that were available on each operator's computer." The chairman of the Senate intelligence committee, Sen. John Rockefeller (D-WV), called the accusations "extremely disturbing" and said he may hold hearings.
